Featured Neighborhoods in Southern Fairfax County

I make no secret of my love of Southern Fairfax County. It's definitely one of my favorite areas of Northern VA. From upscale and luxurious homes to budget-saving cheapos, you can find it here in a community that is close to town, easy on traffic and loaded with activities and amenities. To make things a little more confusing, Fairfax County surrounds the City of Fairfax. Locals generally refer to the county as "Fairfax County" and the city as "Fairfax", but Alexandria uses the opposite nomenclature. "Alexandria" generally refers to greater/postal Alexandria, while "City of Alexandria" refers to the jurisdiction of the City of Alexandria. So if you're a newcomer here it can be a little tricky to find the right home at the right price in the South County area. Contact us if you're looking for a local expert and we'll put you on the path to finding the home that you really want. Some highlights of the Mount Vernon / Alexandria area include:

Live near the Van Dorn Metro at Founder’s Walk

Founders's Walk is located near the  Van Dorn Metro just outside the Beltway. There are a couple of things that residential units in this community are known for. For one thing, the garden-style condominiums in this peaceful neighborhood have units that are considerably larger than typical condo units of the same price. The well-lit units, with its generous amount of windows, also allow for upgrades like fireplaces and hardwood floors in the dining area on top of the typical features expected from condominium units.

History of Franconia VA

Franconia Road, once the means by which Virginia tobacco entered the port city of Alexandria, is now a bustling city road catering to millions of pedestrians on a regular basis. Franconia, throughout history, witnessed events such as Mosby raids, the birth of the first Virginia governor coming from the northern part of the state, and even became the home of Carrolltown, a flourishing community of African-Americans.

What is a Dutch Colonial style home?

This American style originated in homes built by German, or "Deutsch" settlers in Pennsylvania as early as the 1600s. A hallmark of the style is a broad gambrel roof with flaring eaves that extend over the porches, creating a barn-like effect. Early homes were a single room, and additions were added to each end, creating a distinctive linear floor plan. End walls are generally of stone, and the chimney is usually located on one or both ends. Double-hung sash windows with outward swinging wood casements, dormers with shed-like overhangs, and a central Dutch double doorway are also common. The double door, which is divided horizontally, was once used to keep livestock out of the home while allowing light and air to filter through the open top. The style enjoyed a revival during the first three decades of the 20th century as the country looked back with nostalgia to its colonial past. This style is imitated in some of the townhouses in and around Franconia and Kingstowne.  Throughout the seventies and eighties, Dutch Colonials were built throughout Fairfax County.

Guilford of Alexandria, VA

Franconia real estate agents
Nesbitt Realty can help you buy and sell real estate in Franconia.
An old part of Franconia, Guilford can be found intersecting both Kingstowne and Rose Hill. While many communities have begun to flow with these modern times, Guilford has managed to maintain its idyllic feel. Guilford can be found north of Telegraph Road, east of South Van Dorn Street, west of Rose Hill Drive and south of Franconia Road. It is characterized by small, disconnected homes situated in large land areas (half-acre lots are quite commonplace), with some homes occupying as much as two lots. Not much of a transportation hub, it would be odd to find pedestrians and vehicles clogging the streets of this town – thus, it is safe to say that Guilford is a relatively quiet community. Some of the community establishments found here are Thomas Edison High School found in the northeast area, which is also the location of a post office. The Greendale Golf course and Washington Golf’s driving range can also be found in Guilford. As a means of entertainment, Guilford citizens often make their way to Kingstown’s strip mall for a movie or to King Street Blues for a drink or two.
