Fort Hunt Road, in 1955

vintage photo
Ladies waiting on Fort Hunt Rd, for the Fairfax County bookmobile
This is an interesting photo for a number of reasons. Firstly, I can't help but notice that something in the distance has caught the full attention of the dogs. Are the dogs a pug and a great dane? The child in the stroller is bundled up and braced for cold. The little red wagon is loaded full of books and another lady carries an armful of books. In the days before 100 cable channels and the Internet and video games and mobile phones and more, we read just a bit more. I'd like to know exactly where this is on Fort Hunt Road. It looks a bit like the foot of Belle Haven, which would make the empty field Olde Belhaven Towne. But the hill doesn't look quite right for that location.

A walk at the Belle Haven Marina

Last weekend Julie and I decided to take a walk on the trails near the Belle Haven Marina. The weather was warm, one of the first nice days of Spring, so we had a nice little walk to the water's edge. Julie at water's edge The trail follows the edge of the Potomac and is relatively quiet even though it's just off the George Washington Parkway. Belle Haven Marina The day was not so gloomy as these pictures turned out and it was very pleasant just off the trail. Belle Haven Marina There was a bird here and I tried hard to get him on camera, but he was much too quick. He would dive and then surface with a fish in his beak. We saw him eat at least six fish. I was amazed by how much one little bird could eat. Foxy at the Marina Foxy came with us and she trotted into the water to bark at ducks but didn't have the courage to take a swim.

Kayaking the Dyke Marsh

Julie and I rented a tandem kayak at Belle Haven Marina and tooled around in the Dyke Marsh and in the Potomac.
