7 Things To Find At The Historic Fort C.F. Smith Park In Arlington

This beautiful 19-acre site overlooking the Potomac was one of the historic forts built by the Union troops in 1863 to protect DC during the Civil War. The place was named in honor of General Charles Ferguson Smith, who died from a leg infection in 1862.

Located at 2411 24th St N, Arlington, VA 22207, the site is now a park with lush tree canopy, an open meadow, the historic Hendry House, and some preserved remnants of the Civil War. So, what are some of the things you can find at Fort C. F. Smith Park?
  1. The Hendry House- this 20th-century mansion with its historic elegance is part of the park setting and is now used as a venue for meetings, weddings, and other events.
  2. Civil War Earthwork Ruins- are the best-preserved ruins of the 22 forts that were in Arlington during the Civil War.  They include the North magazine, the bombproof, the fort well, and 11 of the 22 gun platforms.
  3. Civil War Visitors center- features displays about the Union soldiers and the defenses of Washington between 1861 and 1865.
  4. Trail  -this 1/2 mile trail has varied surfaces including gravel, concrete, mulch, and asphalt. You can enjoy a stroll around the grounds while observing a variety of wildlife, open space, and some historic features.
  5. Bird Creek- is the perfect place to watch a variety of birds such as Scarlet Tanager, Baltimore Oriole, Magnolia, Eastern Meadowlark, Common Yellowthroat, and Black-throated Blue Warbler.
  6. Wildlife- because the area near the Potomac River, you are likely to come across some small species of wildlife including a deer, fox, squirrels, and rabbits.
  7. Ornamental Peace Garden- is home to several unique species of trees including Japanese Raisin Tree, Ginko, English Walnut, Bottle-Brush Buckeye,  and Royal Paulownia.
