Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) is located in Chantilly, VA on 12,000 acres of land 26 miles from downtown Washington, DC. Dulles' Main Terminal opened in 1962 and since then Dulles has become a major hub for domestic and international air travel with eleven domestic legacy and low fare carriers and 22 international carriers which provide air service throughout the world. Flights operate from midfield concourses A, B, C and D and Z-gates connected to the Main Terminal. The Airport is currently in the midst of a major construction program called D2, Dulles Development, which includes the expansion of Concourse B, a new runway which will open in 2008, and an automated people mover system called AeroTrain which will open in 2009. The airport is connected to the region’s highway system via an Authority-operated, 16-mile Airport Access Highway (called the Dulles Toll Road) dedicated to airport users.

International Style of Architecture

Initiated by European architects--such as Mies van der Rohe--in the early 20th century, this is the style that introduced the idea of exposed functional building elements, such as elevator shafts, ground-to-ceiling plate glass windows, and smooth facades. The style was molded from modern materials--concrete, glass, and steel--and is characterized by an absence of decoration. A steel skeleton typically supports these homes. Meanwhile, interior and exterior walls merely act as design and layout elements, and often feature dramatic, but nonsupporting

projecting beams and columns. With its avant-garde elements, naturally the style appeared primarily in the East and in California. Northern Virginia doesn't have many examples of International architecture, but in Rosslyn the Waterview echoes many of the tenets of this style. Some might call the Atrium an "International".

Real Estate Investors Optimistic

Real estate investors worldwide are convinced the market is at or near bottom and about to shoot up, according the Colliers International’s first survey of global investor sentiment.

Investors from Asia, Canada, Latin America, and Western European say financing is increasingly available, while investors in the Middle East and Eastern Europe make the opposite observation. While there was considerable disagreement about what “normal” is, the majority of respondents say their respective markets will return to “normal” within 18 months. Globally, rents are anticipated to hit bottom this year – the first quarter of 2010 for the office sector was the most frequently offered response, followed by the second quarter of 2010 for industrial, and the third or fourth quarter of 2010 for retail.
