Springfield Days Festival
Springfield Days is a community-wide celebration that takes place the weekend after Memorial Day each year in the heart of Springfield, Virginia. Springfield Days return in 2019 the weekend of June 1 with an array of family-friendly activities across the community. Events are free to attend, but some have for-fee components and items for sale. Given below are some lesser known facts about Springfield Days Festival.
In the 1950s and 60’s the Springfield community held an annual celebration that consisted of food, games, fireworks, music and family fun. Most of the festivities were held in the big field at Old Keene Mill Road and Commerce Street (where Giant and K-Mart are today).
In the early days of the community, the annual event was held on July 4th and organized by service organizations, the Springfield Civic Association, Volunteer Fire Department and local businesses. As the community continued to grow and thrive so did celebrations, community infrastructure, and county services and the July 4th event migrated away from a local focus.
In the 1980’s the business community began a new tradition called Springfield Days that connected the business and residential community through sidewalk sales and special events. That tradition has evolved throughout the years into a full-blown community-wide celebration that harkens back to the good old days. The business community, Park Authority, and various service organizations have teamed up to offer the very best in family fun and entertainment.
Car Show in the American Legion parking lot on Amherst Avenue will also be held at Springfield Days Festival
This year, the event kicks off Saturday morning, June 1, with the car show in the American Legion parking lot on Amherst Avenue from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Then, from noon-5 p.m., Springfield Town Center will host the Taste of Springfield Festival featuring food, exhibitors, entertainment and live music. Later that day, visit the Richard Byrd Library for their annual used book sale.
On Sunday, June 2, beginning at 11 a.m., Lake Accotink Park will host the locally famous Cardboard Boat Regatta. The regatta brings together teams and individual competitors from various schools, organizations, and businesses who show off their building skills and creativity.
