ALIVE! Celebrates 50 Years In Alexandria

ALIVE! one of Alexandria's most popular non profit organization is celebrating its 50th year in existence. The organization, whose name stands for "Alexandrian Involved Ecumenically" was first started in 1969 by a group of members from various church congregations who were concerned with the living conditions of poor people within the City. The organization was formed with an aim to provide assistance to people in need. Despite facing many challenges and obstacles ALIVE! has since grown into becoming Alexandria's largest safety net for those persons living in poverty. It now comprises of members from over 42 faith congregations in many other community partners throughout the City. ALIVE! House was eventually formed in 1972 and remains the oldest shelter for women and families in Alexandria. The ALIVE! Child Development Center was also formed in the same year. This Center provides education for kids ages three to five whose parents are unable to provide a proper education for them. Mayor Justin Wilson has stated that "ALIVE! is the closest thing we have to an essential organization in our city". The organization is looking to continue providing for families in need in Alexandria and look forward to celebrating another 50 years.
