The Many Musicians of Old Town

If you like street music, then you’ll find no better spot to wander than Old Town Alexandria. Through-out the week, especially on weekends, musicians gather in Old Town at street corners and near the waterfront to play music for tips and applause. Most are highly talented professionals, some are learning to play their instrument in front of a crowd. I enjoy them both in different ways.

Here in Old Town Alexandria, you’ll find everything from a lonely saxophone, to steel drums to an entire band. Below I’ve collected a few photos to give you a taste of Old Town’s many musicians.

bluegrass

This foursome was phenomenal singing and playing old time mountain music. It was a great throwback to the Carters because the gal in the front on the guitar was a great singer. The banjo player and bass were on point, and I love the texture that the mandolin (seated behind guitar) provided.

Glass Harp

The glass harp as played by Jamie Turner is an old town treat one simply must hear in person to appreciate.

Harpist

This miss not only strummed the harp to perfection but also sang beautifully.

waterfront musicans

At the waterfront behind the Torpedo Factory there are often a few soloists serving up music for passers-by.

banjo and guitar

I heard some fine picking and strumming from this pair.

What types of condos are available?

River Towers bus stop

You might be surprised to learn the variety of sizes found in condominiums. Condos range from studios and one bedroom apartment on up. You may even find three or four bedroom condos. Of course, the penthouse suite is often quite nice on the top floor. Even condominiums with the same number of bedrooms can have different floor plans and different numbers of bathrooms and half-baths. For example, there are 2 bedroom 1 bath configurations; and 2 BR 2 BA configurations.

What to Look for in an Outdoor Kitchen

Outdoor kitchens continue to be one of the hottest trends in home décor, but not all of them are created equal.

Your realtor Julie Nesbitt

Here are some things to consider when evaluating the safety and durability of this attractive yet vulnerable feature:

  • Is there adequate ventilation? Extensive outdoor cooking spaces should be carefully designed to keep smoke and odors away from dining spaces.
  • Was the installation done by licensed and insured installers? If something does goes wrong — even years later — these professionals will stand behind their work.
  • Are the cabinets, countertops, and appliances really weather proof and likely to hold up?

Homeowner’s Association or Fee Simple?

Benefits of No Association

  • Absence of monthly homeowners or condo fees
  • Less stringent rules and regulations
  • No homeowners or condo association that can impose restrictions without your consent
  • Fewer parking restrictions and fees

Homeowner Association Benefits

  1. No need to save money to cover what condo fees will cover:
    1. Roof repairs/replacement
    2. Common area repairs
    3. Yard Maintenance
    4. Maintenance, paving, and plowing of the driveway, sidewalks, and curbs.
    5. Siding and gutter maintenance or repair
  2. Some have controlled access
  3. On site community amenities from club rooms to pools and exercise rooms
  4. Maintenance of Common Areas
  5. No “surprises” from neighboring “improvements”

Five Reasons to Hold an Open House

Not all real estate practitioners are enthusiastic about the effectiveness of open houses, but here are five good reasons to consider holding one:

Julie sold another!
  1. The odds are low but sometimes open houses lead to a sale.
  2. Home sellers like them. They like seeing their real estate professional working hard for them.
  3. Visitor feedback is good for sellers.
  4. Other real estate practitioners tour open houses and they sometimes produce sales.
  5. Open houses engage people, including friends and neighbors who might bring in a buyer.

What is a “Regency”?

Regency

Although they borrow from the Georgian’s classic lines, Regency homes eschew ornamentation. They’re symmetrical, two or three stories, and usually built in brick. Typically, they feature an octagonal window over the front door, one chimney at the side of the house, double-hung windows, and a hip roof.

They’ve been built in the United States since the early 1800s and you can find a number of examples of the Regency in Northern VA.
