The Marine Corps War Memorial
Arlington Ridge Park contains two major memorials and their distinct landscape areas: The 1954 U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial( also called the Iwo Jima Memorial) and the 1960 Netherlands Carillon. The Marine Corps War Memorial, which is monumental that was inspired by the iconic World War II portrays five Marines and a Navy corpsman raising the American flag on the island of Iwo Jima. The monument stands as a reminder of this event, which marked a turning point in the war in the South Pacific. It represents this nation's gratitude to Marines and those who have fought beside them. While the statue depicts one of the most famous incidents of World War II, the memorial is dedicated to all Marines who have given their lives in defense of the United States since 1775. To the South of the park is the Netherlands Carillon, a Modernist steel framework containing a memorial carillon. This was presented to the U.S. by the people of the Netherlands to express their gratitude for American aid given during and after World War II. The carillon itself symbolizes friendship between the people of the two countries. The commemorative, ceremonial landscape of Arlington Ridge Park attracts visitors from throughout the United States and overseas. It also functions as a neighborhood park for Arlington residents. Activities in Arlington Ridge Park include ceremonial maneuvers by the Marines, concerts, picnics, and strolling along the memorial grounds.
