Why You Should Visit Founders Park In Old Town Alexandria

The Potomac River juts out to the tip of Founders Park
Founders Park
Founders Park is a peaceful riverside park that borders the Potomac River. The park is located at 351 N Union Street in Old Town, Alexandria. The riverfront area of the park was once called West Point in the early 1700s. In the 1700s and 1800s the area around the Park was once used for tobacco storage, a landing point for slaves from Africa and the site of a notorious 'fish town'. In October 1981 the park was acquired by the City of Alexandria and designated as a passive park for everyone to enjoy. The park is maintained by the Founders Park Community Association which is an organization dedicated to the upkeep of the park's beautiful green space and to maintain its designation as a passive park. Since its acquisition by the City of Alexandria, the area around the park has been developed to include shops and restaurants located on King Street. The park is also closely located near the Alexandria Marina and the Torpedo Factory. Founders Park now features a urban green space where the public can stroll along the river front shore, enjoy the flowers and scenery of the gardens, take their dog for a walk, play volleyball and have a picnic while enjoying the fresh air and natural beauty of the park. Reservations by the public is not permitted for the hosting of private events as the community association aims to make the park a place of enjoyment for the entire public. Founder Park is a great place to relax and enjoy the fresh air and the natural beauty of the river.
