The new George Mason University building is envisioned to be a gleaming glass-and-steel tower with the school's characteristic "M" emblazoned on top.

This is according to the new concept design for the planned Institute for Digital Innovation released by the university as they announced $235 million in new fundings from state to expand the campus and develop more tech skills. The new building will be on the west side of the Fairfax Drive campus atop the long-shuttered Kann's Department Store. Announcing the funding for GMU and ten other universities in Virginia on Thursday, Gov. Ralph Northam cited Amazon's HQ2 in Arlington as the key reason why the state needs more tech workers. "This initiative is an investment in Virginians," said Gov. Northam. "Virginia’s tech sector will continue booming only if we can train the workforce those jobs require. With today’s announcement, we are educating a workforce that will fill jobs at hundreds of tech companies around the commonwealth, including at Amazon, helping boost our economy and quality of life in every corner of Virginia." In their own press release, GMU said the state funding will help them produce 16,000 more undergrads and master's graduates in the tech field over the next 20 years. The press release went on to say that more information about the new Institute for Digital Innovation facility will be revealed at an event on Wednesday, Nov 20th. The event will be the 40th-anniversary celebration of the Arlington campus, which currently includes the Shar School of Policy and Government, the Antonin Scalia Law School, and other departments, mostly focusing on graduates and professional programs.
