Potomac (Patowmack) Canal Historic District / Lock Ruins at Great Falls is located at 9200 Old Dominion Drive, McLean. The Potowmack Canal is the best-preserved segment of a river navigation system constructed between 1786 and 1802 by the Potowmack Canal Company. The remains of the canal are approximately two feet deep, although originally the depth would have been about four feet. The locks are constructed of stone and wood. The wood portion of the bottom of one lock is on display in the Great Falls Visitors' Center, along with the remains of a Virginia canal boat.
