Old Telegraph Line is one of the very first telegraph lines in the world.  The line was built by Washington and New Orleans Telegraph Company in 1847 from Washington to Petersburg. A former U.S. postmaster general and an agent for inventor, Samuel F. B. Morse, founded the company. The line was undependable in its early years due to construction flaws. It also sustained extensive damage during the Civil War. In 1866, the line was absorbed by the American Telegraph Co. which merged with Western Union later that year.
