Joint Base Andrews is located in Prince George's County Maryland and was established in accordance with congressional legislation implementing the recommendations of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Commission (BRAC). Joint Base Andrews was formed by the merger of the Andrews Air Force Base and the Naval Air Facility. The facility is under the jurisdiction of the United States Air Force 11th Wing, Air Force District of Washington (AFDW).
The base is named for Lieutenant General Frank Maxwell Andrews (1884–1943), former Commanding General of United States Forces in the European Theater of Operations during World War II. Andrews is widely known for serving as the home base of two Boeing VC-25A aircraft with the call sign Air Force One when the President is on board, that serve the President of the United States. The facility is an amalgamation on 1 October 2009.
