Explore Theodore Roosevelt Island

Theodore Roosevelt Island is one of the best kept local secrets. The small island which is located on the Potomac River between Key Bridge and the Roosevelt Bridge, and connected to Arlington via a pedestrian bridge, offers stunning views and magnificent memorial.
Theodore Roosevelt Memorial
The former Indian Anacostine Island was transformed into a magnificent memorial to pay tribute to the outdoorsman and naturalist Theodore Roosevelt, the USA's 26th president. You can access this 91-acre wooded island sanctuary by a footbridge from a parking lot that is along the Virginia Bank of the Potomac River, just north of the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge. To get to the parking, you will have to enter through the northbound lanes of the George Washington Memorial Parkway. If you are walking or cycling, you can reach the parking lot and footbridge by following the Mount Vernon Trail and is a 10-15 minute walk from the Rosslyn Metro Station. The island has many intertwined trails for exploring wooded uplands, swampy bottomlands, and Potomac River views. If it had been raining, the paths can be a little muddy so its best to carry some boots or walk on the inner trails which tend to be a bit dry. Keep your eyes and ears open and you might spot a family of deers and some lovely wildflowers. Hidden in the thickets, you'll find a large bronze statue of  Theodore Roosevelt and 4 large granite tablets inscribed with some of his famous quotes. On the other side of the Island, you will find a great spot where you can have a picnic as you listen to the tranquil sound of the water flowing in the Potomac and enjoy the stunning view of Georgetown. There are also some nice views of the Rosslyn skyline from the bridge.
