Sixty-five percent of the millennial generation, ranging in age roughly from 18 to 34, say that their intention to purchase a house has significantly increased in the past year, according to a survey from PulteGroup.
“As the economy continues to stabilize, more young adults will wean off of mom and dad and start to live on their own, spurring added economic growth,” HousingWire reports.

As this generation gains greater financial security, more millennials will begin to embark on their own.
A recent article from Barron’s notes that Generation Y could surprise the nation in upcoming years with their spending power and economic growth. The generation is 7 percent larger than the baby boom generation.

Millienials see a bright future.
They might be thought of as a nomadic generation unwilling to settle down, but a recent study by Prudential Real Estate reports millennials are more confident than any other age group that the real estate market will soon recover.
“There was a lot of negativity when all the problems in real estate were happening,” says Earl Lee, president and CEO of Prudential, “but this generation was either too young or too preoccupied with school at the time to notice.”
According to the study, real estate market confidence declines steadily for each successive age group. Eighty percent of 25-to-34 year olds have confidence in the market’s future, compared with 73 percent of 55-to-64 year olds who believe real estate is rebounding.
“Gen X and Gen Y are not as clued in to some of the troubles their parents have gone through in exactly the same way,” Lee says. As these younger would-be home owners enter the workforce and interact with others who own property, their desire to purchase a house increases, he adds.
This could translate into a significant spike in home sales among millennials, which would be good for themselves and the communities where they put down roots, Lee says.
"All of the monumental events that happen in a young person's life start to focus them on real estate and what it has to offer," he says. "These young generations are now all about local involvement, and what better place to do that than in a community where you own a home?"

The Millennial generation is about 90 million strong—forming the largest demographic wave in the country’s history—and some reports suggest they’re readying for home ownership.
Stuart Nesbitt, a chip off the old block
Millennials’ entrance into home ownership has been delayed due to the recession, high unemployment, and high student loan debt. They’ve been living in their parents’ homes, as well as delaying marriage and having children, surveys show. But the pent-up demand from this generation is starting to surface, says Fred Ehle, vice president for PulteGroup.
Homebuilders, like PulteGroup and Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate, recently revealed surveys of what Millennials want in their future homes. In general, the surveys reveal that this generation isn’t wowed by luxury and prefers technology and flexible space.
Pulte Homes found in its research that more than half of Millennials who decided to buy a home last year from the homebuilder said their main reason was to invest and build equity.
As for what they’re looking for in a home, they appreciate an efficient use of space, an open layout for entertaining, ample storage space, and outdoor space that extends their living areas, according to the Pulte survey of 531 adult renters between the ages of 18 and 34.
"What may be different about this buyer is that they may have more stuff," says Fred Ehle, vice president for PulteGroup. "It's different kind of stuff: technological gadgets, gaming. They also do work from home."
The Better Homes and Gardens survey of 1,000 adults ages 18 to 35 found that Millennials don’t like traditional floor plans and prefer unique spaces. They like to do home improvements themselves and are “fix-it” types.
One in five said that “home office” is a better suited name for their dining room, according to the Better Homes and Gardens survey. What’s more, 43 percent said they want to transform their living room into a home theater.
The survey also showed they’d rather have extra space in their kitchen for a TV than a second oven. Nearly two-thirds of those surveyed say they wouldn’t purchase a home without up-to-date tech capabilities.

The Millennial generation is showing a preference for fixer-upper houses over the “cookie cutter” luxury homes their parents’ generation tended to desire, according to a national survey by Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate.
About one in three 18-to-35 year olds recently surveyed say they prefer a “fixer-upper” home with minimal repairs needed. Forty-seven percent say they would be more likely to handle home maintenance jobs themselves over calling in a professional for help. What’s more, 72 percent of Millennials consider themselves handy, earning the nickname the “Fix-It Generation,” according to the survey.
They also aren’t looking for big, luxury homes like their parents but they don’t mind if a home is smaller, as long as it's unique, the survey showed. Forty-three percent say they want a home that is more customized and less “cookie cutter.” They expect each room in the house to fit their lifestyle.
Also, 56 percent say that home technology capabilities are more important than a house with great curb appeal. Sixty-four percent of Millennials said they wouldn’t even consider living in a home that doesn't have the latest tech capabilities. Eighty-four percent say that technology is essential for their new home, with the most sought-after tech in the home being an energy-efficient washer and dryer, a security system, and a smart thermostat.
“It’s critical that real estate professionals understand what embodies a quintessential home for the millennial generation, which vastly differs from the traditional norms of generations before them,” says Sherry Chris, president and CEO of Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate LLC. “Understanding technologies to communicate with this generation is now only one piece of the puzzle for agents; ‘smart’ technological capabilities must now be ingrained into the home itself.”
