Fairfax Master Naturalists Go To Riverbend Park

The spring class of Fairfax Master Naturalists was greeted by the early wildflowers during their first field trip to Riverbend Park on March 14. Riverbend Park is located along the Potomac River in Great Falls. It provides an opportunity to learn the geology of the Potomac Gorge and to view rocks that are part of the Mather Gorge Formation in the upper reaches. Continue reading

C&O National Historical Park Celebrates Earth Science Week

The beginning of Earth Science Week was celebrated by C&O National Historical Park with “Autumn Rocks!” Sunday. Park visitors were given the opportunity by this program to explore the “geology and geography of the canal” as a kickoff program for Earth Science Week. Park Ranger Geoff Sutter, said, "This is our first Autumn Rocks program. We are mainly a history park but [much] of that is related to geology including the buildings and many of the locks." A Little About Scott’s Run Nature Preserve

Scott's Run Nature Preserve is a nature preserve in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. Located in McLean, it is bordered by Virginia State Route 193 to its south, Interstate 495 to its east and the Potomac River to its north. It encompasses 336 acres (136 ha) of woodland with its namesake, Scott's Run, flowing through its west side. Scott's Run originates in nearby Tysons Corner and enters the Potomac on the northwest side of the preserve. Continue reading
