The Pentagon is the location of the home of the Department of Defense. There are roughly 23,000 military and civilian employees, as well as an additional 3,000 non defense support personnel. There is a metro station on the Blue and Yellow line.

  2. Ramps: To conserve steel for World War II, stairs were not built. Thus ramps are used to get from floor to floor.
  3. Timeliness: On September 11, 1941 the groundbreaking took place and completion was on January 15, 1943. There are five floors above ground and a total of two basement levels. With normal circumstances, the building should have been completed in 4 years. Workers worked around the clock to achieve this record time.
  4. Nickname: Prior to 9/11, the Pentagon was dubbed "Ground Zero." At the time of this origin, there was a belief that if Nuclear war erupted, the soviets would target the Pentagon first.
  5. Leadership: The over seer of the Pentagon also over saw the Manhattan Project. Major Leslie Groves efforts on the Manhattan Project led to the creation of the worlds first atomic bomb.
  6. Bathrooms: Upon the Pentagons creation the building was segregated, therefore 284 bathrooms were built to separate the black employees from the white employees.
  7. Corridors: The Pentagon is 17.5 miles long. General Eisenhower once got lost looking for his office while inside the Pentagon.
