What is Shirley Highway?

Shirley Highway is another name for Interstate 395. The I-395 corridor doesn't have Metro train service, but it carries a massive load of traffic nonetheless. In addition to its 8 to 10 lanes of traffic, 395 has an extra 3 lanes of HOV that switch direction depending on the hour of the day.  It is THE major artery from Virginia into the District of  Columbia. 395 leaves DC between the Pentagon and Crystal City (both in Arlington) and on the way out to I-95 and the Beltway at Springfield, I-395 passes Shirlington, LandmarkWest End Alexandria and other neighborhoods. Traffic on 395 is nearly always heavy but usually slows only during rush hour.

view from Arlington Ridge
Arlington Ridge is found between the Pentagon, the Army-Navy Country Club and the City of Alexandria. Arlington Ridge is a neighborhood of beautiful homes, wonderful residents, and history. The Hume School  which was built in 1891 is home to the Arlington Historical Society and was a full-working school until 1958. Fort Scott was named after General Winfield Scott, General-in-Chief- of the Army. It was built to protect the capital. Also referred to as "The Ridge" this piece of land was prepared for construction of the Pentagon. The Ridge also has it's place in Revolutionary War and Civil War history. Army Navy Drive, formerly known as Old Georgetown Road in 1781, was the route used by General George Washington and the French troops to arrive in Yorktown,Virginia where the British were defeated. With a Hollywood role as well, Arlington Ridge was featured in the opening of the 1987 film "No Way Out". With so much beauty and history Arlington Ridge makes for an ideal place to visit and live.

Fort Scott Park Is a historic site

Fort Scott Park
Fort Scott Park is located south west of Crystal City not far from Pentagon City and Aurora Hills in Arlington VA. Fort Scott Park is one of several parks in Northern Virginia that were part of the defenses of Washington during the civil war.  The sign at the site reads:

Historical Site Defenses of Washington 1861 - 1865 Fort Scott Here stood a detached lunette constructed in May 1861 to guard the south flank of the defenses of Washington and named for General Winfield Scott, then General-in-chief of the army. It was subsequently relegated to an interior position by the construction of defenses of Alexandria about 1 3/4 miles to the West. The fort had a perimeter of 313 yards and emplacements for 8 guns. A remnant portion may be found immediately to the West.

Today, Fort Scott Park is more than 11 and a half acres of family-friendly fun that welcomes toddlers and children. Fort Scott Park features appealing playground equipment like a sandbox, a playhouse, and both baby and regular swings. The park has nice shade and picnic pavilions. The adjacent basketball court is a great place to let dad make some free throws.  The park also has tennis courts and softball fields.
