The Pentagon is the headquarters of the United States Department of Defense, located in Arlington County, Virginia near the Potomac River. The Pentagon is so named because it has five sides like a pentagon. The building has five floors above ground, two basement levels, and five ring corridors per floor with a total of 17 and a half miles of corridors.
The building has 6.5 million sqft of floor space which makes the Pentagon is the world's largest office building by floor area. The Pentagon is so busy that it has six Zip Codes assigned to it by the United States Postal Service. The Secretary of Defense, the Joint Chiefs of Staff. the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines all have their own designated zip code. This enormous complex is a workplace for approximately 28,000 military and civilian employees and about 3,000 non-defense support personnel. These people arrive daily from the National Capital Region nearby suburbs by way of over approximately 30 miles of access highways, including express bus lanes and one of the newest subway systems in our country. They ride past 200 acres of lawn to park approximately 8,770 cars in 16 parking lots; climb 131 stairways or ride 19 escalators to reach offices that occupy 3,705,793 square feet.
