History

Fort Ellsworth has historic ties to the Civil War. Weeks after the Union defeat at Blue Ridge Mountain, Fort Ellsworth and the other forts were built. Fort Ellsworth was structured on one of the highest points west, which is now Old Town Alexandria. Built out of timber and earthwork, Fort Ellsworth is just one of the many forts that were constructed in Union occupied Northern Virginia to defend the Capitol of Washington D.C.

Fort Ellsworth, and its sister forts, were built in the weeks following the Union defeat at Bull Run.  Fort Ellsworth was positioned one one of the highest points west of what is now Old Town Alexandria. The forts are found that ridge that separates lower sandy soils around the Potomac, from the higher rockier soils in the West.
