Accessory Dwelling Units To Be Considered As Additional Housing In Alexandria.

The City of Alexandria will be hosting community meetings across the city to get feedback from residents for the development of Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs). Accessory Dwelling Units are commonly referred to as an in law apartment or granny flat and is considered a second separate living units. Due to its small size in nature these dwelling units can be developed by converting the basement of a home, by adding an addition to an existing house, by building a new backyard cottage or by converting an existing detached garage. These units will be fitted with its own electricity and plumbing as well as separate living space, bathroom and kitchen.

ADUs can be an asset to families who wish to have relatives living with them while maintaining privacy for both parties or used as a rental unit for families who wish to gain additional income.

The city will be hosting meetings on March 12 2020 and March 28 2020. An online portal will also be opened for residents to provide their feedback on the proposal.
