Formerly known as the Custis-Lee Mansion, this Greek revival style home was built in 1802-1804 as a memorial for George Washington. The house sits high on a hill overlooking Arlington National Cemetery, Potomac River and Washington D.C. It served as home to the Confederate Army General Robert E. Lee.  and his family for thirty years before the Civil War. The most prominent feature of the house is the imposing portico fronted by eight large columns. You will love the views from this location. Inside the house, are several rooms decorated with period furniture, offering a glimpse of life at the Arlington House before the Civil War. The home was seized by the United States government during the Civil War, and the grounds used as the site for Arlington National Cemetery, in part to ensure that Lee never returned home. The mansion has since been designated as a national memorial. You can find the Arlington House by climbing the hill at the end of Memorial Avenue and passing the JFK gravesite. The mansion is quite visible and easy to find. You will likely find many other visitors making way alone or by guided tours. Just follow the crowd and you'll get there.
