City Of Alexandria To Purchase The Historic Freedom House Museum

The City of Alexandria is working towards purchasing the historic Franklin and Armfield building at 1315 Duke Street. The building which houses the Freedom House Museum was put up for sale by the Northern Virginia Urban League earlier this year. The City has agreed to purchase the property with the hope of partnering with the Commonwealth of Virginia and with private donors to fund the renovations and expansion of the museum onto the first and second floors. The Franklin and Armfield building was once the headquarters for the largest domestic slave trading firm in the United States and still stands as a reminder of a dark chapter in the US and human history.
