Alexandria Fire Department Receives Federal Grant

The Alexandria Fire Department has received a grant of over $2.6 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The grant will be used to improve staffing as well as health and safety for personnel. The Fire Department which operates out of 10 fire stations with over 250 firefighters, paramedics, fire prevention staff and administrative staff will use $1.5 million of the grant to hire nine new full time firefighter/emergency medical technicians. This will allow fire engines to now reach their goal of having four person staffing.  The portion of the grant for $1.1 million will be used for the purchasing of exercise equipment as well as various improvements to the Fire Department’s Health, Safety and Risk Management Division.
