What’s the difference between a row house and a townhouse?

Many people believe a row house and a townhouse are the same thing, but there is a distinction in the two terms.  Let’s first start by saying that townhouses and row houses both differ from detached homes in that both row houses and townhouses share at least one common wall. Detached homes on the other hand do not share any walls with a neighbor.  It’s easy to confuse a row house and townhouse because the are both “attached” homes. The distinction between the two is in how they are situated. Row houses usually line a street, but whether they are on a street or in a field, rowhouses are in a row.  Townhouses are grouped together staggering forward and to the rear with different layout. Most row houses were built in the early 19th century through the 20th century. They are usually tall, narrow structures with a common facade. Townhouses are a later development.  Townhouses have two or more stories. Modern townhouses in the suburbs are often belong to larger developments. In urban areas in Northern Virginia, townhouses are often in-fill development to maximize land-use.
