Basilica School Of Saint Mary Celebrates Its 150th Anniversary

In the year 1869 the Saint Mary's Catholic School was founded by two sisters of the Holy Cross. Now 150 years later, the school has been through many years of renovations and expansion. Started as a free school for all parish children the school featured two classrooms in St. Mary's Hall which was located on the corner of Royal and Wolfe Streets. The first set of students comprised of 20 girls and 20 boys who were placed in separate classrooms. Without a playground on location Royal Street had to be shut down to allow the kids to play. Over the years the school population began to grow and in 1950 the school moved to its permanent location at 400 Green Street with an enrollment of 500 students. There was further expansion of the school and in 1997 a former convent was converted to accommodate classrooms for 7th and 8th graders with 6th graders joining in 2011. The school now serves more than 700 students from pre-k to 8th grade. The anniversary celebrations will include an alumni happy hour, a birthday picnic, an adult only spaghetti dinner and a commemorative mass and alumni breakfast. The school will also be launching its new expansion and renovation project which will include building an 8,000 square foot addition which will connect the elementary and middle school. The school will continue to develop exceptional "Saints, Stewards and Scholars" for the next 150 years.
