A New 240-Room Hotel May Soon Come To Ballston

Ballston may soon be home to a new hotel with several rooms. According to the recently submitted plans to the Arlington County, the Vienna-based developer Schupp Companies hopes to build a 10-story hotel with 240 rooms at 501 N. Randolph Street and 4019 5th Road N. The lot was previously occupied by popular Italian restaurant Tutto Bene before it closed in 2014, after 26 years in business.

The details on Schupp official website indicates that the developer bought the land in 2015, and touts the "over one million visitors" to nearby Ballston Quarter mall and the Medstar Capitals Iceplex. UrbanTurf had reported on Tuesday that the plans had changed and now called for 180 rooms, but that could not be immediately confirmed. The plans are set to be discussed in two weeks, on Thursday, October 24, by the county's Site Plan Review Committee.  The public meeting will be held in the Bozman government center building(2100 Clarendon Blvd) in Courthouse from 7-9 p.m. In 2011, Schupp was engaged in a long legal battle with Clarendon’s now-closed Kitty O’Shea’s where the owner accused the developer of forcing the bar out to make way for a new hotel. The planned hotel eventually opened in 2016. If these plans are approved, the hotel would sit near the Ballston Harris Teeter redevelopment project on N. Glebe Road where developers are planning to build a new Harris Teeter space underneath a new, 732-unit residential building.
