Chessie’s Big Backyard at Lee District Park is located at 6601 Telegraph Road in Alexandria, Fairfax County. Chessie’s Big Backyard features a climbing web, climbing ropes, rocks, tree stumps, stone walls, a rope ladder, suspension bridges, and various ramps. There are interactive gadgets placed throughout the playground where kids can track the sounds of a skunk, raccoon, river otter and alligator and search for woodland animals along the rubber surface.
The playground area is a huge, accessible play structure with tons of opportunities for kids to climb, slide, run and play. The portion of the playground, known as the “Tiki Village,” is designed for ages 5-12. This “backyard” playscape has slides, swings, and of course, a giant treehouse perfect for large motor play.
Chessie’s Big Backyard is sea monster-themed, with two large playgrounds for different age groups and a splash park for the summer. The little kids' playground has a pirate ship and a lighthouse at just the right height for little climbers. The larger playground for older kids offers lots of high climbing and big slides.
The splash park is Chesapeake-Bay themed with a lighthouse, misting sunflowers and Chessie the sea serpent. There is also a smaller beach area with interactive water tables and softer water features for the little set.
