Glencarlyn is one of Arlington’s oldest and most stable residential neighborhood. Established in 1887, it is bordered by Arlington Boulevard(Route 50) to the north, Carlin Springs Road to the west, Branch stream Valley to the south, and Glen Park to the east.
Originally a summer community, Glencarlyn is a woodsy suburban neighborhood that is defined by narrow streets, small lots, varied housing styles and ages,and ample mature trees and greenery.Glencarlyn is mostly comprised of single-family homes with a few townhouses and an apartment building. The housing styles vary from the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
Originally known as Carlin Springs, Glencarlyn is home to some of the oldest structures in Arlington including the Ball-Seller House, which was built in around 1742, sits at the core of the neighborhood the “Village Center”. There is also the Carlin Hall, a small cemetery, the neighborhood library, and Burdette House.
The Village Center also provides parks and open spaces such as a children playground at the back of the Carlin Hall and a community garden behind the Library. Glen Park, Four Mile Run, and Washington & Old Dominion (W&OD), located at the east and northeast sides of the neighborhood, provides the residents with various amenities including picnic shelters, playgrounds, walking and hiking trails, paved bike trails, and small play fields.
Glencarlyn is also strategically located near shopping areas, educational institutions, and provides easy commute to downtown Washington DC. The Carlyn Springs Road provide the only access in and out of the neighborhood.
