Arlington County Board members are set to consider paving a new connection between the W&OD Trail and the 9th Street S. in Barcroft by the Buchanan Community Garden.
According to an article by alnow.com, the proposal aims to put an asphalt connection and a stop sign between 9th Street and the trail thereby crossing the area on the side of the trail which is currently being used by Dominion subsidiary Virginia Electric Power Company.
In a report to the Board, County staff wrote that they hoped that paving and providing signage for the path will help to “improve mobility for pedestrians and cyclists between nearby neighborhoods and the W&OD Trail.”
During this year’s update, the county’s Master Transportation Plan designated the W&OD Trail as a “primary route” for cyclists while 9th Street S. is a key bicycle route that runs parallel to Columbia Pike.
The proposal is set to be discussed during the Board’s meeting this Saturday, June 15. If it passes through, County Manager Mark Schwartz will then sign a letter with the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority, which owns and operates the W&OD Trail, that will allow the county to build and maintain the connection.
