With the future headquarters of Amazon slated for Arlington there has been an increase in talks about affordable housing and homelessness in Alexandria and the surrounding region. Amazon has officially launched a new campaign where it will match the donation of its employee to three Alexandria organizations which focus on homelessness or affordable housing. The new campaign will see Amazon employees donating to 20 selected non profits organizations with Amazon matching those donations one-for-one up to $5 million from June 11 - Sept 30. The three Alexandria organizations selected to benefit from donations are Carpenter's Shelter, Community Lodgings and Wesley Housing Development Corporation. Carpenter's Shelter is a homeless shelter which will house a shelter and affordable housing units with 10 set aside for residents transitioning from the shelter. Community Lodgings is an organization who strives to help homeless people become independent by offering transitional housing, affordable housing and youth education programs. Wesley Housing Development Corporation develops and maintains affordable housing communities in Norther Virginia and the wider D.C. area.
