Why You Should Visit The Freedom House Museum In Alexandria

The Freedom House Museum located at 1315 Duke St in Alexandria holds a very tragic story about slavery in Alexandria. The Museum was once the headquarters and holding pen for Franklin and Armfield, the largest domestic trading firm in the US. During the salve trade persons were bought and forced to the slave markets in Natchez, Mississippi and New Orleans by foot or by ship. The Museum is operated by the Office of Historic Alexandria. On a visit to the Museum, visitors will spend majority of the time down in the basement where they will be shown an exhibit of first person accounts through personal video narratives and artifacts of enslaved men and women. The exhibit will also show details from the trading business and the harsh reality that was encountered by slaves during the domestic slave trade. Visitors will also learn about Alexandria's role in the domestic slave trade. The Museum is open to the public on Fridays and Saturdays from 1-5 p.m.
