Dunn Loring is located in northeastern Fairfax County. It is bordered to the west by the town of Vienna, to the north by Tysons Corner, to the east by the Capital Beltway, and to the south by Interstate 66. Dunn Loring is an oasis of quiet suburban streets, shade trees and single-family houses west of McLean and Arlington in Fairfax County. Dunn Loring spreads upon roughly two square miles and has retained a small town feeling despite close proximity to major traffic corridors and commercial centers.
Dunn Loring has streets that are curved, and a sense of privacy prevails. Houses are a mix of 100- to 200-year-old clapboard structures, some that are 50 years old and others built more recently.
Dunn Loring Park, with its trails, grass, picnic areas and ball courts, presents a very mini version of the National Mall and lots of kids show up and play here. The W&OD Trail crosses the community and is popular among joggers, strollers and dog walkers.
In Dunn Loring, the Mosaic District is the latest hip destination for urban entertainment, shopping, dining, living, walking, and easy parking. Dunn Loring residents can also easily catch a film at the Angelika Film Center & Café, get a massage or people-watch from wooden benches perched on wide sidewalks. Whole Foods Market, Trader Joe’s, Safeway and Giant are also close and collectively offer thousands of grocery products. Tysons Corner Center has hundreds of specialty and department stores.
Dunn Loring is bordered roughly by Leesburg Pike on the north, Interstate 495 on the east, Interstate 66 on the south and Gallows Road, Electric Avenue, and Cedar Lane on the west. The community consists mainly of single-family dwellings and a few townhouses.
The community’s proximity to major commercial and retail locations locally and to downtown Washington is a prime amenity to residents. Entrances to Interstates 495 and 66 are minutes away. Leesburg Pike/Virginia Route 7, which traverses Northern Virginia, is also close. Three Metro stations are nearby — Dunn Loring-Merrifield and West Falls Church-VT/UVA on the Orange Line and the forthcoming Silver Line.
Schools that serve Dunn Loring include Cedar Lane and Stanwood Elementary School, Joyce Kilmer and Thoreau Middle School, and George C. Marshall High School.
