Fort Hunt Park: Adjacent To George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate

Fort Hunt Park in the City of Alexandria was once a part of George Washington's Mount Vernon estate. Fort Hunt Park is located along the Potomac River and is just 11 miles from Washington, D.C. Fort Hunt Park has been through several transformations. During the Spanish American War, batteries at Fort Hunt defended the Potomac River. Soldiers interrogated prisoners at Fort Hunt and trained pilots in escape and evasion. In present time, Fort Hunt Park in Alexandria is a favorite spot for picnicking. Mixed hardwood forests and open fields provide habitat for birds and other creatures. There are several large fields and three softball diamonds. A playground located in Area A is always open to the public. Visitors may explore the outsides of Batteries Robinson, Sater, Porter, and Mount Vernon. The batteries are closed to the public because they were lined with asbestos during World War II and used to safeguard nitrate film rolls from the National Archives.
