Facts You Should Know About The George Washington Masonic National Memorial

The George Washington Masonic National Memorial sits atop Shooter's Hill and is one of Alexandria's most recognizable landmarks. The memorial was constructed in 1922 and is dedicated to the memory of the late George Washington, the first President of the United States and a Mason. In 2015 it was designated a National Historic Landmark for its architecture and rich history as one of the largest scale private memorials to honor Washington. The George Washington Masonic National Memorial serves as a community center, research center, library, performing arts venue and a meeting site for Masonic Lodge members. The George Washington Masonic National Memorial consists of nine (9) floors with each floor containing interesting displays and exhibits of Washington and the history of Freemasonry. Visitors can explore this historic landmark from the moment they step through its doors. the main entrance hall features a 17 foot bronze status which depicts Washington as a lodge master. Indulge in the sights of 46 foot long murals on either side of the statue with beautiful stained glass windows dedicated to Washington and other prominent Freemasons. The first and second floors of the building is filled with various halls and meeting rooms. The fourth and sixth floor contains the George Washington Museum and the Memorial Library with a replica Ark of the Covenant on the fifth floor. The seventh and ninth floor contains a replica of the crypt beneath the Temple of Solomon and a recreation of King Solomon's Throne room respectively. At the end of exploring all floors visitors can visit the memorial's 333-foot-high tower and enjoy the 360 degree views overlooking the Potomac River, Mount Vernon, Old Town and all of Washington D.C.
