Did I Hate the Workday Commute on DC Metro?

Is the Orange Line during working hours worth the hassle or not?  My experience on the DC Metro is not what you would consider veteran – like, but I do have an initial thought or two as to what this would be like in my every day routine.

When I rode the DC Metro Orange Line I was heading from Rosslyn to Ballston.  It was only a small portion of my overall trip that day.  This, although a short trip in the grand scale of things on the Metro, told me a lot about the trips that I would take in the future.  The work day is somewhat of a challenge on the Orange Line, but nothing out of control.

Rosslyn has lots of condominiums to chose from

What I experienced in the ride was a packed car, but a quick transit.  It’s getting on the car that was the challenge.  Not that there weren’t cars arriving, it’s just that with the time between cars was about ten minutes or more and you didn’t always get on the first one.  Sometimes I looked to my left and right and saw the corridor of the rail way packed all the way down to the wall on both left and right sides.  As soon as the next car revealed a glimpse of its fuzzy yellow headlights, the surrounding people looked up from their iPhones and dashed inside to secure a spot on the car.

This is in no way as packed or crazy as it is in Chicago on the L, but there is a chance you could wait for up to twenty minutes to get on the way to your destination, or maybe just the next stop on the way to yet another.  All in all, I found it to be cost effective, but a bit frustrating for a person used to traveling in a vehicle.

What it is like on the Metro in Northern VA?

First Impressions of the DC Metro

This week I had the opportunity to ride the DC Metro for the first time.  After recently moving to the area and previously experiencing other mass transit systems, I was curious.  I rode the Metro from Huntington to Ballston, transferring from the Yellow to the Blue rail at Pentagon and then from the Blue to Silver at Rosslyn.

Keeping in mind the numerous trips I have taken on the L in Chicago, the subway in New York and the Metro in St. Louis, I reached a couple of conclusions:

First of all, the rail cars themselves are pretty much the same on all four, New York being more used and St. Louis Metro being the newest.  The ease of purchasing a card here on the DC Metro and transferring from one rail car to the other seemed to be easy enough for even me to figure out.

The next thing that I did notice was that the amount of time I spent waiting for the next rail car to come was longer than I expected.  One thing that slowed things down that day was the shutting down of an area of the rail due to a fire response team reacting to some non-disclosed issue.  Other than that, the waiting was not horrible and the rail cars were not over-crowded.

The last thing worth mentioning is the price that was paid to travel there and back.  I paid $2.00 for the card and it cost me $7.15 for the round trip.  After returning to the origination of my trip I realized that this price was a good deal, because I didn’t have to pay to park my car.

The DC Metro seemed to be safe and without a doubt was a good deal for the wallet.

Record Fair at the Artisphere

A Record Fair was held at the Artisphere. Vendors and consumers gathered for this day long activity. At the midway point, there was a film screening. Afterwards, the director of the movie had a question and answer session with the audience. Ian Mackaye was in attendance.

Rosslyn is located in the northeastern corner of Arlington County, north of Arlington National Cemetery and directly across the Potomac River from Georgetown in Washington, D.C. The numerous high-rise buildings of Rosslyn appears (in some ways) more urban than nearby Washington.

Added to the mix are new condominiums, lively restaurants and exciting shops, all with easy access to Washington and close-in proximity to Interstate-395, the Pentagon and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

Performance Art at the Artisphere

Visiting the Artisphere in Rosslyn was very enjoyable. I was there to see Kaki King, a critically acclaimed female guitarist. Taking the some what spiral stairs past the lounge, and up to the second floor was neat. There were a few art related quotes to read from the walls display, as well as a series of artistic photographs streaming from a projector onto a wall.

Entering the Dome Theatre, there were steep seats which created an immediate intimate closeness with the stage. Looking up, the spherical shape of the Dome Theatre reminded me of a planetarium. During the performance everything was very professional, there were perfectly timed lights and video that corresponded with the acoustic-electric guitar’s rhythms & progressions & physical movements which were a part of King’s kickstarter. During a pausing moment, Kaki King told the audience that this was her third performance of the nights entertainment, entitled ‘the Neck is a Bridge to the Body.’ Overall, I found the music and video to be soothing and cerebral. Afterwards, I left for the Orange line metro station two blocks away, still thinking about the sounds and pictures that I had seen earlier that evening.

The Artisphere is the result of 40 years of community desire culminating with a public & private partnership with Arlington County & Rosslyn Business Improvement District and Monday Properties. Amenities here include:

  • 4,000 sq. ft. Terrace Gallery, plus two additional gallery spaces for visual arts
  • 4,000 sq. ft. Ballroom (3,000 sq. ft. dance floor) for events, performances and live music
  • 220-seat Dome Theatre for concerts, films and presentations
  • 125-seat Black Box Theatre—the new home of WSC Avant Bard
  • 387-seat Spectrum Theatre for concerts and events located just next door
  • Free WiFi
  • Two-story Video Wall screening experimental film and video installations

Westmoreland Terrace- Quiet Arlington Condos

The Westmoreland Terrance Condominiums are a garden-style, private entrance condo community located at 1314 North Fort Myer Drive along North Ode Street in Arlington, Virginia. Located just outside of the Rosslyn business district and the greater Courthouse Metro area, this sprawling condo community spans 4.2 acres and offers a quiet and more subtle living alternative compared to the surrounding metropolis. Built in 1947 and converted in 1982, the post-war cinder and brick facade buildings offer parking and storage amenities, and 8 out of every 10 condos features a private laundry facility.

The Westmoreland Terrace Condominiums house 149 condo units and there are 159 unassigned parking spaces available to its residents. Residents have a choice between one and two bedroom units, and the condos are also pet friendly, a rare feature compared to nearby residential communities. Finally, each unit features thick walls and a choice between red and white oak parquet floors.

The Westmoreland Terrace condos have anywhere between 14 and 16 units per building and the layout of the property captures the rich history of Arlington County. The surrounding acreage maintains many of the original trees that existed before the building was constructed, some in excess of 150 years old, and the property is reminiscent of an older, less urbanized ideal. The Westmoreland Terrace Condominiums boost a tucked-away feeling and yet the property is within several yards of US 50 and is only an 8 minute walk from the Rosslyn Metro station. The property is both well maintained and well managed. Through its consistent and quiet manner, this calm and peaceful condo community has thrived for over 60 years.

Cherrydale — Spacious Estates Located in the Heart of Arlington

Cherrydale is a popular neighborhood in Arlington County VA

Cherrydale is a neighborhood in Northern Arlington, Virginia. It is centered on the intersection known as the Five Points consisting of Quincy Street, Military Road, and Old Dominion Road and boasts single family homes. Cherrydale Estates are primarily brick homes built between 1900-1930’s surrounded by large trees and quiet streets. At first glance you would think you were in a small town.

The Washington Monument is only 3.5 miles away and Georgetown is roughly 2 miles away.  Interstate 66 is minutes away providing quick commuting into Northern Virgina. Ballston Metro and Virginia Square Metro are also in very close proximately providing quick commuting.

Cherry orchards inspired Dorsey Donaldson to name the area “Cherrydale” in his 1893 application for a post office. Only a few remains of the original cherry orchards survive, all on private residential property.
