Bucknell: Comfort & affordability separated, but not far, from busy N. VA life
Built primarily in the 1940s and 1950s for soldiers returning home from World War II, Bucknell is located in Groveton of Fairfax County off Fort Hunt Road between Rt. 1 and the George Washington Parkway. Bucknell is strategically located near so much but away from it all. Plus, compared with neighboring communities, Bucknell offers affordability, making it a winning neighborhood for families of all varieties. Bucknell includes Bucknell Manor and Bucknell Heights, neighborhoods containing quiet, tree-lined streets with little cut-through traffic.
Most Bucknell homes, built half a century ago, have undergone renovations or received additions. Three types of homes are most common in Bucknell: townhouses, luxury homes and the highly recognizable Cape Cods. Townhouses usually come in two variations: two bedrooms and a basement (mostly unfinished) or a home with a spacious, often finished, attic that comes with or without a basement. Most townhouses have large, private backyards, too. Luxury homes often began humbly like the rest of Bucknell‘s homes but grew into elegant manor homes. Finally, Cape Cods were some of the first houses built in the U.S. Historically, they were shingle-sided one-story cottages without dormers. Today’s Cape Cods typically have two dormers and have become more modern.
Outside the home, Bucknell is perfect for an afternoon stroll as it contains something of a “Leave it to Beaver” charm. Located about a mile or two from Huntington Metro and served by top-notch public schools, Bucknell provides a lovely home to families with both children and commuting adults. Plus, children and adults alike are sure to love Bucknell’s proximity to the Potomac River and the dining and shopping attractions Old Town has to offer. Plus, Bucknell Manor Park, Mount Vernon District Park, White Oaks Park, Mount Vernon Recreational Center are nearby, too. The icing on the delectable cake that is Bucknell: The town also supports many youth leagues and community organizations.

Waterfront, wooded lands and quiet lifestyle at Arcturus
Just north of the bend in the Potomac River at Mount Vernon lays Arcturus, a stunningly quaint community with homes that have waterfront and water views. Located in greater Alexandria and Fairfax County between the GW Parkway and the Potomac River, Arcturus provides a quiet, country life amid wooded land and roads with little traffic. At the same time, it’s too far from the bustling city. In fact, years ago Arcturus was a place for fishermen to get away from busy working life.
Today, Arcturus has few fishing shacks like it did back then, but several harbors can still be found in and around the community. Also, most homes have piers or docks, making Arcturus a great community for fishermen, water lovers and those who enjoy the calming effect of the great outdoors.

Classic red bricks, central location, many amenities make Riverton a top pick
Located at the intersection of Bashford Lane and the GW Parkway, Riverton condominiums provide comfortable, simple living that’s great for commuters.
Built in the 1940s, Riverton’s class red brick structure has been part of Old Town Alexandria for decades, but developers recently renovated the buildings, converting Riverton‘s three buildings into condominiums. Riverton is just a few blocks from the Potomac River waterfront, shopping, parks, restaurants, nightlife and Washington, D.C. Also, Riverton is a short drive from the Ronald Reagan National Airport.
Because the buildings were built decades ago, the condos don’t have a ton of storage space. People just didn’t own much in the 1940s! But Riverton has plenty of desirable features and amenities, including one- or two-bedroom floor plans and recently renovated interiors that provide a modern feel.
Riverton‘s open-floor kitchens contain 42-inch maple cabinetry, granite countertops, stainless steel appliances and hardwood flooring. The rest of the home offers track lighting, Berber carpeting and ceramic-tiled bathrooms flooring. Individually metered utilities, a washer/dryer unite and controlled heating and air conditioning are also available. Outside the condos, community amenities include a fitness center, a lounge and a swimming pool.

Newly built, beautiful condos in Old Town North
Watergate of Landmark vs. Watergate of Alexandria: What’s the difference?
Investigating real estate in Alexandria can be a daunting task, and it becomes even more bewildering when similar names of completely different locations arise. For instance, Alexandria is home to two Watergates: Watergate of Landmark and Watergate of Alexandria. Although built by the same builders around the same time period, both of Alexandria’s Watergates have their own defining characteristics and unique benefits.
Watergate of Landmark
Sometimes called “Watermark” for short, Watergate of Landmark, located in Alexandria’s West End, packs itself full of pleasing amenities. Residents of these high-rises live a secure, comfortable lifestyle. The condos have 24-hour gated attention with attendees, are completely fenced and contain closed circuit TV for extra protection.
Watergate of Landmark, which dates back to the mid 1970s, offers numerous size options, too. Models come in four options: one bedroom and one bathroom, one bedroom and one-and-a-half bathrooms, two bedrooms and two bathrooms or three bedrooms and two-and-a-half bathrooms. Condos have 13-foot balconies, crown molding, upgraded kitchens, spacious closets and a laundry area. Also, residents can choose hardwood or carpeted floors. Parking, fitness center access and a 38,000-square-foot community center are a few more benefits Watergate of Landmark residents enjoy. Plus, pet owners can keep their pets in their condos.
Watergate of Landmark’s location also makes it desirable, especially for commuters; it’s near I-395 and I-495 and is a mere mile from Blue Line’s Van Dorn Metro Station. Plus, Watergate of Landmark is inside the beltway and near other modes of public transportation.
For those seeking fun and retail locations, Watergate of Landmark is near many urban establishments, parks, plazas and the Landmark Mall, for which the area around Watergate of Landmark is named. The area is also known as “Condo Canyon” because of the large volume of high-rise condominiums in the area.
Watergate of Alexandria
Built before Watergate of Landmark in the late 1970s, Watergate of Alexandria, in Alexandria’s North Old Town, features two- and three-story luxury townhouses located near many sites important to commuters and others. For example, Watergate of Alexandria is one block east of the GW Parkway and a 15-minute walk from Braddock Metro Station, giving residents easy access to Washington, D.C., and Arlington. It’s also 10 miles north of Mount Vernon, a few miles from National Airport and just two blocks from the Potomac River.
But Watergate of Alexandria’s colonial elegance makes it a superb place for comfortable living. The location’s Williamsburg-style row homes and landscaped courtyards and gardens add to the wide range of services covered by the condo’s association fees. Services include clean up, pest control, snow removal, landscaping and trash and recycling.
Watergate of Alexandria: Old Town colonial architecture
Watergate of Alexandria provides residents with traditional Old Town, colonial elegance. It isn’t sleek and modernized; instead, its charm lays in its courtyard its gardens and its location in the north end of Alexandria’s Old Town. In fact, the two- and three-story townhouses’ architecture echoes the Old Town colonial and federal styles. Also, Watergate of Alexandria is located near the Potomac River and the George Washington Parkway, allowing for easy access to Washington, D.C., and Arlington.
Watergate of Alexandria doesn’t have a pool, but it makes up for that with other features, including grounds maintenance, pest control, snow removal, driveways, a fish pond, fences and gates, garages, garden benches, storage rooms and meeting spaces.
Although built by the same builders, it’s important to note that Watergate of Alexandria is NOT Watergate at Landmark, which is a high-rise in Alexandria’s West End.
