The George Washington Masonic National Memorial sits atop Shooter's Hill and is one of Alexandria's most recognizable landmarks. The memorial was constructed in 1922 and is dedicated to the memory of the late George Washington, the first President of the United States and a Mason. In 2015 it was designated a National Historic Landmark for its architecture and rich history as one of the largest scale private memorials to honor Washington. The George Washington Masonic National Memorial serves as a community center, research center, library, performing arts venue and a meeting site for Masonic Lodge members.
