A Pedestrian’s Perspective: From the Parkway to the Woodrow Wilson Bridge

Looking for a peaceful place to travel to get out of the house? All along the George Washington Parkway stretches a path  that goes  all the way to Washington DC. This distance is frequented by people going at their own pace – from the high speed bicyclist commuter to the power walking local. On the way there are places to picnic / barbeque, waters to fish, and open fields for recreation.

An often overlooked detour is available just before Old Town Alexandria. By taking a pedestrian path onto the Woodrow Wilson Bridge there is a path that hugs the road until arriving at the National Harbor.  It starts with a view of a graveyard. Then the panorama delivers a waterfront city skyline juxtapositioned with vehicles driving across the bridge.

Finally after passing the bridge there is a place to sit and enjoy the view, or continue to the National Harbor. Round trip its worth the effort.

Record Fair at the Artisphere

A Record Fair was held at the Artisphere. Vendors and consumers gathered for this day long activity. At the midway point, there was a film screening. Afterwards, the director of the movie had a question and answer session with the audience. Ian Mackaye was in attendance.

Rosslyn is located in the northeastern corner of Arlington County, north of Arlington National Cemetery and directly across the Potomac River from Georgetown in Washington, D.C. The numerous high-rise buildings of Rosslyn appears (in some ways) more urban than nearby Washington.

Added to the mix are new condominiums, lively restaurants and exciting shops, all with easy access to Washington and close-in proximity to Interstate-395, the Pentagon and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

Performance Art at the Artisphere

Visiting the Artisphere in Rosslyn was very enjoyable. I was there to see Kaki King, a critically acclaimed female guitarist. Taking the some what spiral stairs past the lounge, and up to the second floor was neat. There were a few art related quotes to read from the walls display, as well as a series of artistic photographs streaming from a projector onto a wall.

Entering the Dome Theatre, there were steep seats which created an immediate intimate closeness with the stage. Looking up, the spherical shape of the Dome Theatre reminded me of a planetarium. During the performance everything was very professional, there were perfectly timed lights and video that corresponded with the acoustic-electric guitar’s rhythms & progressions & physical movements which were a part of King’s kickstarter. During a pausing moment, Kaki King told the audience that this was her third performance of the nights entertainment, entitled ‘the Neck is a Bridge to the Body.’ Overall, I found the music and video to be soothing and cerebral. Afterwards, I left for the Orange line metro station two blocks away, still thinking about the sounds and pictures that I had seen earlier that evening.

The Artisphere is the result of 40 years of community desire culminating with a public & private partnership with Arlington County & Rosslyn Business Improvement District and Monday Properties. Amenities here include:

  • 4,000 sq. ft. Terrace Gallery, plus two additional gallery spaces for visual arts
  • 4,000 sq. ft. Ballroom (3,000 sq. ft. dance floor) for events, performances and live music
  • 220-seat Dome Theatre for concerts, films and presentations
  • 125-seat Black Box Theatre—the new home of WSC Avant Bard
  • 387-seat Spectrum Theatre for concerts and events located just next door

A trip to the White House Rose Garden

A friend gave us ticket to a visit to the White House Rose Garden this weekend, so Julie and I took the Metro into DC. Despite having been born and raised here, I’d never gone to the White House before. We took this opportunity to enjoy a nice Spring day and enjoy some of the sites of DC.

Free Fun: The Smithsonian Museum of Natural History

The Smithsonian Museum of Natural History is a timeless classic site that visitors and Virginians alike should frequently visit. The free museum, with the help of professional curators, has made this national exhibit a great place for historians, children, and just the general public to enjoy themselves.

The first floor presents an accomplished array of first impressions. Upon entering the museum, you will be greeted by the famous African Elephant (pictured below). Other exhibits include “Orchids- A View from the East”, The Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef, “African Voices”, The David H. Koch Hall of Human Origins, The Dinosaurs/Hall of Paleobiology, The Fossilab, and The Sant Ocean Hall. A kid friendly place for younger visitors is the Discovery Room where museum instructors allow the public to discover history using interactive objects and hands on activities. This personal empiricism is great for learning through self-guidance and pacing.

The Second floor of the museum includes the Hope Diamond, an exhibit on Cyprus, the Butterfly House, The Carmen Lucia Ruby, The Janet Annenberg Hooker Hall of Geology, Gems, and Minerals, the Korea Gallery, the Osteology Hall of Bones, an exhibit on Reptiles and Amphibians, and the The O. Orkin Insect Zoo.

The museum is located at the intersection of 10th Street and Constitution Avenue NW in Washington DC. It is open 364 days a year from 10 AM to 5:30 PM normally.
