Farmer’s Markets ready for business
Each May to November, twelve sites throughout Fairfax County spring to life with the activity of an open-air market. These bustling marketplaces draw thousands of Fairfax County residents with a feast for the senses. The vibrant colors of freshly picked fruits and vegetables contrast with the fragrant perfume of cut flowers. Across the market floats the aroma of freshly baked breads and pastries while one savors a sample of creamy artisan cheese. The markets provide a way to connect with the producers of our food-a way of life once commonplace for many of our parents and grandparents.
The Markets offer a wide variety of freshly picked fruits, vegetables, and cut flowers. There are also fresh eggs, baked goods, honey and cider to purchase. Milk and cheese products, along with a wide array of meat products, round out the edible delights. If gardening is an interest, many vendors have small plants at the beginning of the season, while other vendors have larger landscape plants for those ambitious projects.
All Fairfax County markets (except the Frying Pan market) host Fairfax County Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Plant Clinics. Citizens can bring plant or insect samples for pest identification or disease diagnosis. Master Gardeners also help citizens by having informational displays on topics such as Container Gardening or EcoSavvy Gardening.
All products sold at the Farmers Market are produced by the vendors within 125 miles of Fairfax County. Buy local and support sustainable agriculture in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. You will find the freshest and most desirable fruit, vegetables, plants, baked goods, eggs, dairy and meats available.

Arlandria Clean-up Day!
Next Saturday will be the second annual Arlandria clean-up day! Your help is needed. Please come out, as ever bit helps. Please pass the word and tell any and all who would be interested.
Most of the work involves spreading mulch and pulling weeds, but some bigger projects will include:
- Installing a large garden at the newly acquired open space property at the corner of West Reed and Commonwealth Avenues. Plants have been generously donated from area neighbors. If you are thinning out your own garden and would like to donate extra non-invasive plants, topsoil, or mulch to the project, please contact us! We hope to grow this park into an important addition to the neighborhood.
- Performing prep work at the Four Mile Run Park expansion properties at 4125 Mount Vernon Avenue (possibly for a future Four Mile Run Park Farmers Market and Community Arts building).
- Maintaining gardens established last year and starting some new ones.
Contact Nick Partee or show up at the site to volunteer:

Please let us know if you can provide any tools or an extra pick-up truck!
FRESHFARM Markets comes to Crystal City in May 2010
Crystal City (Arlington, VA) – After huge success in its inaugural season, the Crystal City Business Improvement District (BID) is happy to announce the start of the second farmers’ market in Crystal City and the beginning of a new partnership with FRESHFARM Markets. Beginning May 18 FRESHFARM Markets will bring back local farmers and producers selling fresh produce, baked goods, artisanal cheeses, fresh-cut flowers and more to the heart of Crystal City.
“We’re thrilled to bring back the farmers’ market to the Crystal Farms program,” said Angela Fox, President and CEO of Crystal City BID. “And, we’re even more excited to have an organization with the depth and experience of FRESHFARM Markets, which currently operates the top farmers’ markets in the region, running this program for us.”
The Crystal City FRESHFARM Market will setup shop on the sidewalk of Crystal Drive between 18th and 20th Street every Tuesday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. starting May 18th and running through October 26th.
The farmers’ market enables area employees and residents to purchase locally produced fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy, specialty foods, and artisan goods. Bringing local farmers and consumers together, Crystal Farms helps ensure the employment of sustainable growing practices and reduces fossil fuel consumption by offering locally grown goods that have a much shorter travel distance.
The Crystal City Green Scene program also includes the community Power Purge and Shred on April 21st and 5k Fridays every Friday in April. Crystal City is green year-round, however, with its “low-to-no waste” policy at all events. Events use eco-friendly products (plates, forks, cups, etc.), compost bins, and active recycling.
Courtesy of Crystal City BID — The Crystal City Business Improvement District (BID) is a public-private partnership established in April 2006 to promote the vibrant Crystal City business, retail, restaurant and residential community. The BID is committed to showcasing the area as a world-class destination for visitors, employees and residents. Crystal City is ACTIVE, ARTFUL, ACCESSIBLE, and GREEN.
