The National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) is the U.S. Government agency in charge of designing, building, launching, and maintaining America’s intelligence satellites. The NRO is part of the Department of Defense. The Director of the NRO is appointed by the Secretary of Defense with the consent of the Director of National Intelligence, without confirmation from Congress.
The NRO’s roughly 3000 employees are found in a four-building complex on 68 acres, five miles south of Dulles International Airport. The NRO complex was completed in 1994. The NRO was established in 1960, but its existence was classified until 1992. The location of the headquarters was declassified in 1994, after construction had nearly been completed, under the false name of a private company.
