About Captain Rocky Versace
Captain Rocky Versace “Humbert Roque Versace” was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on July 2, 1937 of Puerto Rican-Italian descent. He grew up in Alexandria VA and was educated at Gonzaga College High School in Washington DC and Norfolk Catholic High School. Captain Rocky Versace joined the Armed Forces in Norfolk VA and followed his father’s footsteps by entering the United States Military Academy West Point.
Captain Rocky Versace began his duty on May 12, 1962 in the Republic of Vietnam as an Intelligence advisor. He has volunteered for an extension in May 1963 with the aim to attend seminary at the end of his service and join Catholic priesthood so he could return to Vietnam as a missionary to help orphans, but with only 2 weeks left of his tour acting as an Intelligence advisor, Captain Rocky Versace was captured along with Lieutenant Nick Rowe and Sergeant Dan Pitzer. He has attempted escaped 4 times, insulted the Viet Cong at indoctrination sessions and cited the Geneva Convention treaty continuously. Eventually the Viet Cong separated Captain Rocky Versace from the other prisoners placing him in leg irons and gags in an isolation box. The last thing the prisoners heard his voice; he was singing at the top of his voice “God Bless America.”
The Liberation Radio of North Vietnam announced Captain Rocky Versace’s execution on September 26, 1965. Although his remains were never recovered, a headstone was placed at Arlington National Cemetery above an empty grave. Captain Rocky Versace’s name “Humbert R. Versace” is inscribed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial (Panel 01E, Row 033).
On July 6, 2002, the Rocky Versace Plaza was constructed in Alexandria VA in honor of Captain Rocky Versace along with a statue of him that was made through the donation of $125,000 from the people of Alexandria VA
On July 8, 2002, Captain Rocky Versace was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor by President George W. Bush for his heroism at the White House East Room. This was the first time an Army Prisoner of War was awarded the nation’s highest honor for his patriotism in captivity
Captain Rocky Versace was inducted into the Pentagon Hall of Heroes on July 9, 2002, by the Secretary of the Army Thomas E. White and Army Chief of Staff General Eric K. Shins
