Just 20 minutes south of Downtown Washington DC is the Landmark Section of Alexandria, VA. The Landmark section of Alexandria is a true melting pot of local and international cultures. Just take a walk or a nice leisurely Sunday drive down Duke Street and you will surely find your mouth watering as you pass an eclectic assortment of eateries. You’ll soon realize that you are hungry, but cannot quite figure out what to eat, as there are so many options from which to choose!
Arby’s, next to the Boston Market, across to the Chinese Buffet, adjacent to an Italian Restaurant, perpendicular from an authentic Greek Gyro carryout, cattycorner to the Vietnamese Barbecue, juxtaposed to the Peruvian Chicken place, which is only a stones throw from arguably the area’s most popular social hangout, Mango Mikes restaurant Bar & Grill. Head in for a happy Hour Margarita, and you might find yourself having two! And don’t forget Wednesday is half price Lobster night a quarter mile up the road at Shooter McGhee’s. And if it’s late night or morning breakfast food you’re looking for, a 24 hour IHOP is just around the corner.
You will probably also notice that you have likely never seen so many grocery stores in a 2 mile radius. Harris Teeter, Giant, Safeway, Shoppers, and an international grocery market featuring food items and ingredients specific to African, Caribbean, Hispanic and South American origin.
Why all of these eateries lining Duke Street? Because people gotta eat! As the other thing that you will notice about landmark is that it is overflowing with condominium and apartment complexes, inhabited by tens of thousands of people who live here, and commute to Washington DC for work.
Obviously people choose to live 15 minutes south because it’s slightly cheaper than living in the District just south of the district in Arlington, but the benefits of lower cost of living, combined with the ease of food access, far outweigh the cost of the addition 10 – 15 minute commute.
The amenities also make it well worth your while. Because in Landmark, you’ll find a tennis court and swimming pool come standard with the housing complexes. If all you get is a tennis court and a Swimming pool, you may need a new real estate agent. A great many of these complexes have mini golf, beach volleyball, indoor & outdoor swimming pools and tennis courts, indoor hot tubs, saunas, full gyms, basketball courts, and a couple even have their own carwash stations!
