Truly Beautiful to See at Fort Belvoir
Fort Belvoir – Best natural resources conservation program in the Army and DoD with the mission “To provide standardized, effective & efficient services, facilities and infrastructure to Soldiers, Families and Civilians for an Army and Nation engaged in persistent conflict.”
Originally the site of the Belvoir plantation in Fairfax County, VA, Fort Belvoir is a U.S Army installation and a CDP – Census Designated Place where several United States military organizations are located and logistical, intelligence and administrative support is given.
Fort Belvoir was originally home to William Fairfax from 1740 where he built a brick mansion in 1738 viewing the Potomac River. Fort Belvoir remained to be the Fairfax’s home for over 30 years till the mansion was destroyed by a fire in 1783 and the heir George William Fairfax never returned from England in 1773.
The base came to being during World War I and named Camp A. A. Humphreys after Andrew A. Humphreys, then renamed Fort Belvoir in honor of the Belvoir plantation in 1930 while the connected United States Army Corps of Engineers Humphreys Engineer Center kept the original name.
