An architect’s dream: Hollin Hills designers delivered award-winning homes
Homes in Hollin Hills host award-winning architecture sometimes described as oddly sized with tall windows and no ornamentation. Designed in the late 1940s by Charles M. Goodman, Hollin Hills won the Revere Quality House Award from the Southwest Research Institute in 1950 and two Test of Time Awards from the Virginia Society of the American Institute. Also, Hollin Hills has been included in the Fairfax County, Va., Inventory of Historic Sites.
Hollin Hills homes originally contained large expanses of glass and sleek lines, and while slight updates have occurred, the original designs remain intact. The neighborhood’s atmosphere is also important; the designers, architects and developers wanted to incorporate the landscape into the homes’ overall appearances and believed grounds of one house should merge with the next, creating a park-like setting. Some identify it as being in an “urban forest” because it feels like deep woods but is a mere mile or so away from the City of Alexandria.
Located between Rt. 1 and Fort Hunt Road, many schools serve Hollin Hills.
